About JIPMER

Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (JIPMER) traces its origins to 1823 as École de Médecine de Pondichéry established by French administration. In 1956, the institution was upgraded to a medical college and was renamed JIPMER in 1964.

Today, JIPMER is an Institution of National Importance under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India. It is both a medical college and a hospital that provides undergraduate, postgraduate, and super-specialty medical education with an annual intake of 250 MBBS, 300 MD/MS, and 150 DM/MCh students.

Our 2400-bed hospital serves over 2.5 million outpatients and 150,000 inpatients annually, providing tertiary care to the population of Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, and neighboring states.

Our History & Milestones

1823

École de Médecine de Pondichéry established by French administration, marking the beginning of medical education in the region.

1956

Upgraded to Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research under the Government of India.

1964

Formally renamed JIPMER and recognized as a premier institute for medical education.

2008

Declared an Institution of National Importance by an Act of Parliament.

2012

New 2400-bed hospital complex inaugurated, making it one of the largest medical facilities in South India.

2023

Celebrated 200 years of excellence in medical education and healthcare services.

JIPMER offers comprehensive medical education programs from undergraduate to super-specialty levels.

Undergraduate Programs

Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) - 5.5 years program with annual intake of 250 students. Curriculum includes foundation course, integrated teaching, and clinical rotations.

Postgraduate Programs

Doctor of Medicine (MD) & Master of Surgery (MS) in 32 specialties with 300 annual seats. Also offers Diploma programs in various clinical and para-clinical specialties.

Super Specialty Programs

Doctorate of Medicine (DM) & Master of Chirurgiae (MCh) in 15 super-specialties with 150 annual seats. Programs include Cardiology, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Gastroenterology, etc.
